Henry:
The badly disoriented fellow was given a bottle of cold Pilsner, and the unflappable barman notified the police. Within an hour the weakening stranger was escorted to the Mt. Pleasant prison for processing. He was then transferred to Massarraty Asylum for treatment. So far all that is known about the man is that he is under the delusion that he is Adolf Hitler, but his actual identity remains a mystery. He speaks no English and has a thick Austrian accent. With the aid of a translator it has been learned that he believes to have been only recently in the Führerbunker during the Battle of Berlin. He further insists that he was drugged by his physician, Theodore Morrell, and placed in an experimental and highly secret device created by Nazi scientists for exploration of the future. According to him, the time travel machine was designed by Nazi physicists to peer into the future more accurately than his Occult Bureau, and allow his General Staff to formulate battle plans based on accurate knowledge of future enemy positions. A prototype for actual human travel was in development and waiting for testing in the bunker itself. This equipment was based on Einstein's Unified Field Theory and the designs and experiments of Nikola Tesla, which gave rise to our own Philadelphia Experiment. A powerful electrical field would be created and infused with a tremendous magnetic pulse, literally pulling the occupant within the field out of our time-space continuum and dropping him in another site outside the warping of space and time. Hitler hoped the transportation device would be a super weapon capable of sending his stormtroopers though space-time without detection. In late 1945 only forward travel was considered possible. This resident in room 202 reportedly complains bitterly of being betrayed by cowards who gave up on Germany, yet sent him to safety in the future while they sacrificed themselves. In particular, he blames Goebbels for sabotaging his suicide in the Fürherbunker and sending him into the future to resurrect the Reich. "The fools had no conception. Hitler is Germany, and Germany is Hitler!" the patient declares through translator Carl Wiligut. "By sending me into the future they doomed the Reich, themselves, and every German. National Socialism is dead! It can never be revived from a hospital cell in Iowa!! They played into the very hands of the Jews and their puppet leaders among the Allies! They took me from the wheel when no other captain could have made that ship stay its course! Oh, to be a visionary in a world of blind men! The fools, if we had held out but another day, I assure each and every one of you that Russia's greatest defeat would have been at the gates of Berlin!! If there were only some way to go back in time and tell them the device worked! Then the words `too late' would be struck from our vocabulary!!" Professor Haushofer, who oversees this case, elaborated further, "The patient in 202 is in a very delicate state of mind, extremely fragile, and must have adopted this persona as a reflection of a persona turmoil and destruction which he equates with the fall of the Third Reich. We can only guess at this juncture what that crisis he faced in reality was, and why on earth facing this delusion would be preferable. Whoever he is, he has a remarkable knowledge of the events he claims to have been part. Perhaps, he was a scholar or professor. This may be an important clue to his true identity. There are also more adventurous members of our staff who advocate more remarkable theories involving remote viewing, past life regression-all sorts of wild talk. However, I assure the public at large that this frail old man is only a sick little fellow who will recover in due time under our care. We don't want anyone to think for a moment that he is the genuine article. Such an idea would be very bad for everybody, everywhere." Dr. Eckart is equally cautious, "We have turned away a great many people seeking an audience with the patient in 202. It is very inadvisable that he be allowed to speak to anyone except his physicians and the translator. We greatly fear for his safety from those who would like to believe he is somehow Hitler magically transported through time so that they can get justice by killing him." Whoever the patient in room 202 is, he is under constant supervision. As part of his "therapy", he is allowed to continue wearing his Nazi uniform and has been voraciously reading any and all texts concerning the war and its aftermath. The patient seems to be preparing himself for the possibility that the forward warping through time caused by the experimental device may be a temporary effect, and that he could boomerang back to the past at any moment. If true, his glimpse of the future will allow him to alter the time stream as we have come to know it. Petitions to prohibit the patient from examining any historical texts or declassified military archive material have met with nothing but scorn from the staff at Massaraty. Haushofer stated in during a recent press conference, "It is ridiculous that anyone is even suggesting that reading materials supplied to a patient locked in the Psych Ward's Security Wing could possibly affect the outcome of a war that has been over longer than most of you have been alive. We are interested in bona fide medical opinions and scientific facts in regard to this unusual and tragic case of mental illness; not the fantastic whimsy of science fiction and doomsday enthusiasts."
