RED MEN OF IOWA:

Alexander Robert Fulton was the son of, James and Rebecca Greene Fulton and the nephew of my great-great grandfather, Alexander Fulton.

A. R. (as he was called to distinguish him from his uncle, Alexander, and from his cousin, Alexander [1826 - 7 December 1891], son of William and Mary Coalman Fulton) was born in Ohio, 11 October 1825. He was raised in a family whose members were personally acquainted with many of the people and places referenced in this book and whose homes were only a few miles from Jim Jordan's home, Iowaville Cemetery and the Sac and Fox race grounds, etc. When A. R. moved to Iowa in 1851 at the age of 26, his cousin, Joseph Warren Fulton (my great-grandfather) was carrying the U. S. mail between Fairfield in Jefferson county, Iowa to Bloomfield in Davis county over a route that took J. W. through the village of Iowaville. One of the frequent stops on these trips was at Jim Jordan's home along the Des Moines River. Jordan was already a friend of the older generation of Fultons (I still own a piece of Iowa walnut baseboard from Mr. Jordan's home) and many stories about Black Hawk and the Sac and Fox Indians have come down through our family and all of the families who lived near Four Corners (the point where Wapello, Davis, Van Buren and Jefferson counties touch). A. R.'s Uncle Billy (William Fulton, referenced above) served under Captain Brush at the battle of Thames, and surely shared those stories with his nephew. It was a delight to find that A. R. included many of these oral histories in his work, RED MEN OF IOWA, which he published in 1882.

The pages presented on your screen are as nearly like those in the book as is possible when changing printed text into HTML for on-line presentation. All sentences and words are broken at the end of the pages just as in the book and all misspellings and printing errors were left in place to better give the flavor of the original. Illustrations are linked into position to be viewed between the appropriate pages. You will notice that each page in this site is validated by both the World Wide Web Consortium for proper HTML composition and by Bobby for accessibility to persons with disabilities. If you are having difficulty receiving images or with spacing, etc. appearing inaccurate on your screen, please view the pages with Netscape's Browser which is set to accurately receive HTML. (Rather than a Microsoft or other browser.)

It has been a labor of respect to a member of my family to prepare A. R.'s book to be put on-line. My husband, Bob, and I have spent a lot of hours working on it, and we hope that you enjoy reading RED MEN OF IOWA.

Happy reading!
