A. R. FULTON, ESQ., DES MOINES, IOWA,
Dear Sir:--Your letter dated August 2d received, asking for information in regard to the Indians residing in Tama county, Iowa.
I herewith inclose an extract from the report of the Hon. Commissioner of Indian affairs, dated November 1, 1880; also a copy of my first and second annual reports, 1879 and 1880, to the Indian department. These will give you a large portion of the information desired.
In regard to your inquiry about Johnny Green, I do not know of any picture of him. He did not belong to this tribe of Indians; he was a half-breed Pottawattamie, his mother was a Chippewa, and he came to Iowa from Wisconsin, I think in 1838 or '39, with five or six families of mixed Pottawattamies. A remnant of them still reside in Marshall county, his daughter is married to one of our
Indians and resides there. He was only chief of a little band.
The principal chief of the "Musquakies" (red men) or "Foxes," a part of the confederated tribes of Sacs and Foxes, formerly residing in and owning this State, Maw-me-wah-ne-kah, died July 3, 1881, aged about forty-five years. He was very pleasant and agreeable in his manner, but very firm and obstinate in his opinions, thoroughly Indian in his ideas, opposed to the advancement of his people in the ways of the white people, and very much opposed to the establishment of schools. He was very firm and zealous in his religious belief.
The other chiefs, Mah-taw-a-qua and Wau-co-mo, are aged about sixty years, both of them thoroughly Indian, and opposed to schools and advancement in civilization. No great improvement can be made while they control the tribe.
They receive annuities to amount of $11,174.33 a year.
This year they lost all their crops by the flood in the Iowa River, the water was four or five feet over their fields and village--the highest water known for thirty years.
Hoping the above information will be of value to you in getting up your new work on Indians of Iowa, I am yours,
Very respectfully,
GEO. L. DAVENPORT,
United States Indian Agent
