THE revolutionary struggle having ended, Great Britain yielded to the United States her sovereignty, not only over the territory then embraced by the colonies, or States, but including the vast region westward to the Mississippi River. The region then designated in general terms as the Northwest Territory, embracing the present States of Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin and part of Minnesota, was claimed by Virginia. In 1784, Virginia ceded to the United States all her claims to the country northwest of the Ohio River upon certain conditions. The conditions were finally agreed to, and in 1787, Congress adopted the ordinance which was the basis for its organization into States, and for the government of the same.
